Day 01 - Airport - Colombo

Day 02 - Colombo - Anuradhapura - Cultural Triangle

Guided City Tour of Anuradhapura by Bicycle

  • A privately guided cycling city tour of Anuradhapura. Currently the capital of Sri Lanka’s North Central Province, was the capital of the country’s first established kingdom from 4th century BCE to 1017. The remains of ancient Anuradhapura now confined to an area of 40 square km comprises of a range of antiquities among which is the country’s first large stupa, the world’s oldest Bodhi tree, monastic complexes ancient irrigation infrastructure still in excellent working condition after some modifications.
  • Just 16km off the sacred city of Anuradhapura lies the cradle of Buddhism in Sri Lanka as the stone carvings and unending stairways proclaim a legacy which hinges the philosophy sermoned by Buddha – ‘The Awakened One’. This is the holy land which sheltered the first Buddhist sermon by Arahath Mahinda to King Devanampiya Thissa, when the Poson full moon brightened a forest used by the king himself for hunting Walk passing a massive cooling fountain and head towards the renowned staircase of the temple.
  • Feel the coolness of granite slabs as you shift from the ruins of a hospital to Kantaka Stupa built in 1st century B.C. enriched with magical hands of the Sri Lankan stone carver. Step into the courtyard and towards its left sitting calm, is the refractory. Ho wever, the highlights of the sacred land are Maha Seya – the main dagoba – and Aradana Gala, the peak of the rock assuring breathtaking viewpoints of the Kingdom of Lakes, Anuradhapura.
  • Also, visit the Aukana Buddha statue.
  • This statue of the standing Buddha dating from the 5th century is in the village of Avukana near the Kalawewa reservoir in Kekirawa North Central Sri Lanka. It is more than 40 feet tall including its base which is in the form of a lotus flower. Carved from a granite monolith, it depicts the Buddha in a variation of the Abhaya mudra. The remains of a building around it indicates that the statue was located in a large image house.

Day 03 -The Cultural Triangle
  • City tour of Polonnaruwa
  • The second most ancient of the country’s kingdoms Polonnaruwa was the capital of medieval Sri Lanka from the 11th to about the 13th century. As one of the best planned ancient cities, Polonnaruwa is home to a range of historic attractions that include monasteries, ancient stupas and Hindu and Buddhist places of worship. Some of the great irrigation works built during this time, seen when entering the city, are still in use today albeit with some improvements.
  • Thereafter proceed to Sigiriya
  • One of the key archaeological sites in the cultural triangle, Sigiriya is a vast archaeological site dating from the 5th century. However it has been inhabited since pre historic times. The main attraction is the 80 meter granite rock with frescos of heavenly maidens and archaeological remains on top. The base of the rock is equally interesting with water and boulder gardens, a moat and old city walls. The onsite modern museum is the best place to start.

Day 04 - Cultural Triangle - Kandy
  • Peradeniya Royal Botanical Garden tour
  • First developed as a pleasure garden under royalty and later harmonized by the British, the Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya – today bundled with the most welcoming facilities located just 4 miles off Kandy – is a flourishing national asset in the Wonder of Asia./li>
  • Walk into this 147 acre bliss of an experience, passing well-tended lawns, pavilions & an octagon conservatory to be greeted by the vast expanse of a magnificently landscaped lush green turf which will encourage you for an exhilarating break. Towards the north of the entrance rests a cafeteria that one might come across before stepping into some of the highlights – the orchid house & giant Javan fig tree – of this place which overflow in grace.

Day 05 - Knuckles
  • Proceed to Knuckles & experience a trekking at Knuckles mountain range
  • The pigmy forests of Knuckles mountain range, a UNESCO World Heritage Site to the north of Kandy city, offers a unique biodiversity and several challenging trekking trails. Among the popular trails is one from Corbetts Gap to the salt peter caves and from the Knuckles Conservation Centre to mini world’s end escarpment at the southern end of the range.
  • You will be starting the trek through village home spice gardens, vegetable fields, rice fields, tea plantations, pigmy forests and plateaus. The trek is approximately about 8 kms one way and its 16 kms in total. At the end of the trail you would be able to swim at a base of a nice waterfall. You are expected to encounter with species such as Deer, Barking deer, Deer monkey and various types of Lizards. In this trek you will be climbing from 1200 ft to 1850 ft. On the way back you will be able to do some bird watching.

Day 06 - Kandy
  • Kandy City tour
  • Located in the central hills, Kandy was the capital of the country’s last kingdom. Among the many places of historical, religious, cultural and ecological significance is the Temple of the Tooth where the Buddha’s tooth relic is enshrined, the 200-year-old Kandy Lake, remains of the 700 year old royal palace, a royal forest reserve, several pieces of 18th and 19th century colonial architecture, historic Buddhist and Hindu temples, the country’s largest botanic garden and the tea museum in the Hantane hills.

Day 07 - Kandy - Hill Country
  • Visit a tea plantation and a tea factory in the Hill Country
  • A tour to the cold, misty hills that take pride of a great tea tour, covering lush green blankets of tea plantations. You will be taken to a tea factory processing the prestigious brand of Ceylon Tea, to observe a rich tradition kept alive up to date. As you witness the hissing and swishing of machines, inhaling the wonderful scent arising from these facilities, make sure to end your day in style over a perfectly blended cup of pure Ceylon Tea. Taste a cup of pure Ceylon tea in the factory.

Day 08 - Hill Country - Ella - Yala
  • Proceed from Nuwara Eliya to Tissamaharama
  • En-Route, Visit Rawana Water Falls in Ella
  • An amazing waterfall of 1080 feet high close to the road from Ella to Wellawaya about 06km south from Ella .The stream, a tributary of Kirinda Oya plunges with a foaming spray over a series of ledges into the valley close to a road bend. The waters rise from Wewatenna highland above the rocks. In general the rocky underground of the waterfalls in Sri Lanka consists of hard gneiss or granite, but here the material is khondalite, a kind of lime stone which undergoes decay faster. Thus there are caves near the falls. King Ravana of Ramayana legend is said to have lived in one of the caves above the waterfalls.

Day 09 - Yala
  • Safari of the Yala National Park by jeep.
  • Covering nearly 130,000 ha along the south-east coast of Sri Lanka, Yala is a strict nature reserve and a national park. Its landscape comprises of light forest, scrub and grasslands, shallow lakes and lagoons. The most visited park in the country is home to elephants, the world’s largest concentration of leopards, sloth bears, spotted deer, sambur, crocodiles, langurs and a myriad water birds among other species. The best time to visit is between February and July.
